MINNEAPOLIS,
MN, August 7, 1999 Chart Applied Technologies
introduced the CO2OL Clean [55] at an open house held
August 5, 1999, at Nu-Life Cleaners in Forest Lake,
MN. An audience of Minnesota state representatives
and drycleaners from across the country came to witness
the first public demonstration of the technology of
the new millennium, the DryWash(TM) Cleaning Process.
"The product I think is going to be great for the
state of Minnesota, the drycleaning industry and the
country as well," said Art Dunn Director, of the Minnesota
Office of Environmental Assistance. Through an innovative
partnership between the state of Minnesota, MVE, Inc
and Nu-Life Cleaners, there is now a non-hazardous,
environmentally friendly choice for drycleaning customers.
"In the last eight weeks we have drycleaned 15,000
pounds of clothes and here it is, 0 hazardous waste,"
announced Alan Goracke, owner of Nu-Life Cleaners.
Originally developed to super clean defense weapon
system optics and nuclear components, this liquid
CO2 technology is now being used by Chart/MVE Applied
Technologies for the first time ever in the US, in
the demanding environment of an independent drycleaning
shop. "Once again Minnesota takes the lead and comes
in first," stated Dunn. Using CO2 as their primary
solvent, Nu-Life is cleaning at the rate of 500 garments
a day going to the general public. A natural substance,
liquid CO2 has none of the environmental or health
risks attributed to perchloroethylene, (perc) or other
petroleum based solvents commonly used in the drycleaning
industry. Phyllis Strong, from the Minnesota Pollution
Control Agency, explained the existing perc regulations.
"There are rules that apply to this perc, this standard,
that doesn't apply if you just use CO2."
Speakers
at the conference included: Jon Wikstrom, President
of Applied Technologies, A Chart Industries Company;
Dale Sivils, Technical Staff Member of Los Alamos
National Laboratory; Jack Belluscio, President of
Global Technologies: Art Dunn, Director of the Minnesota
Office of Environmental Assistance; Phyllis Strong,
Small Business Assistance Specialist of the Minnesota
Pollution Control Agency and Alan Goracke, Owner of
Nu-Life Cleaners. Cycles of clothes were cleaned during
the open house allowing attendees to experience the
DryWash(TM) process first hand.
In
attendance along with local state agencies, representatives
from the state of Minnesota also included: the Office
of Congressman David Minge, the office of Congressman
Jim Ramstad, the Office of Bill Luther and State Representative
Ray Vandaveer.
